From the outset, Information and Communication technologies (ICT) have impacted value creation. The financial industry was one of the first to apply ICT on a large scale even before the advent of the Internet. Since the emergence of the World Wide Web much has been written about its abilities to impact traditional value creation systems on enterprise, inter-organizational, and industry level. Crucial questions for both researchers and practitioners are to what extent observed impacts are sustainable and thus fundamental to a certain value creation system such as business models and what strategic opportunities they offer.
