The financial crisis became fully visible to the public in summer 2007. It has continued ever since and is by far not over yet. The banking industry has been massively affected by this crisis and many banks have not found their way back to a sustainable and profitable business model. There are frequent proposals to search for solution patterns in other industries that have previously gone through existential crises and massive changes. The automotive industry is mentioned repeatedly in this respect. Occasionally such references provide interesting insights, and indeed the automotive case study that is presented in chapter 3 is a very instructive example. But usually these cases are not based on a sufficiently broad and grounded analysis. Therefore, it seems promising to conduct a more systematic study on this topic considering the experiences of the automotive industry and its transferability (Ch. 4) to the banking industry.
